Portage, MI. Lightning Kicks Martial Arts, one of southwest Michigan’s longest-standing martial arts schools is now offering free police jiujitsu to any local law enforcement officers in Kalamazoo or Portage.

Jiujitsu, translated from Japanese as the gentle way, equips smaller individuals with technique that is capable of maximizing biomechanics and leverage to control larger more aggressive individuals with the least amount of force necessary.

“Our police jiujitsu classes are taught and designed by active police officers, use of force experts, and jiujitsu black belts. This is a combination that is very hard to find and this is a model that needs to be replicated nationwide,” says Amir Khillah, owner of Lightning Kicks Martial Arts.

“We need reform in policing that needs to be mandated by the legislative body and department administrators. That change will take time. In the meantime we wanted to do our part in effecting change in our little corner of the world. We have the experience, knowledge, facility, staff, and tools to be able to implement something that can have nation-wide effects.” Continued Khillah.

These classes will be provided free of charge to any Kalamazoo or Portage police officer. The dates and times will be announced once Lightning Kicks receives permission to reopen from Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer. Lightning Kicks is currently mandated to remain closed due to the Governor’s COVID-19 executive order.

Officers that are interested need to be cleared by their physician for strenuous physical activity then they can contact Lightning Kicks via email at info@lightningkicks.com
